Good truck battery maintenance comes down to a monthly routine: keep the terminals clean and tight, check the voltage, top up the water in flooded batteries with distilled water, keep the battery charged, and protect it from heat. A healthy 12V battery reads about 12.6V at rest, and you should recharge it once it falls to 12.4V. In Bangladesh’s heat, a battery that is looked after this way lasts longer and is less likely to leave a loaded truck stuck at the roadside.
This guide covers how a truck’s battery system works, ten maintenance tips, warning signs, battery life, 2026 prices in Bangladesh, and how to dispose of an old battery safely.
How a truck’s battery system works
Most pickups and light trucks run on a single 12V battery. Most heavy trucks and buses run on 24V, made by connecting two 12V batteries in series. The battery starts the engine; once the engine is running, the alternator powers the truck and recharges the battery.
Truck batteries in Bangladesh are mostly lead-acid, of three types:
| Type | Needs water? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Flooded (wet) | Yes, distilled water | The most common truck battery; suits hot climates |
| Sealed maintenance-free | No | Cannot be opened or topped up |
| AGM | No | Sealed; more sensitive to heat and overcharging than flooded batteries |
Flooded lead-acid batteries are among the most reliable types for hot climates, while sealed batteries above 40°C risk drying out, according to Battery University.
Safety before you touch the battery
A charging lead-acid battery gives off hydrogen, and a small spark can ignite it. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s battery safety guide recommends:
- Wear goggles or a face shield and acid-resistant gloves.
- No smoking, flames or mobile phones near the battery.
- Never lay a spanner or other metal tool across the terminals.
- Disconnect the earth terminal, usually the negative, first, and reconnect it last.
- Do not work on a battery that is cracked or leaking.
10 truck battery maintenance tips
1. Keep the terminals clean and tight
White or green crust on the terminals blocks current and makes starting harder. With the engine off, remove the negative cable, then the positive. Scrub the terminals and clamps with a mix of one heaped tablespoon of baking soda in about half a litre of water and a battery brush, rinse, dry, and coat the terminals with a thin layer of petroleum jelly, as Kwik Fit advises. Reconnect positive first, then negative, and make sure both clamps are tight.
2. Check the water in flooded batteries
If your battery has removable caps, check that the liquid covers the plates. Top up with distilled or deionised water only, never tap water or acid. The best time is after charging: let the battery stand for at least 20 minutes, then fill to the maker’s level mark, according to the HSE. Heat speeds up water loss, so check more often in summer.
3. Check the voltage every month
A digital multimeter costs little and tells you the battery’s state of charge. Measure across the terminals after the truck has rested for several hours with everything switched off.
| Resting voltage (12V battery) | State of charge |
|---|---|
| 12.65V | 100% |
| 12.45V | 75% |
| 12.24V | 50% |
| 12.06V | 25% |
| 11.89V | Flat |
Source: Battery Council International figures published by Battery University, measured at 26°C after a 24-hour rest. On a 24V truck, measure each 12V battery separately. Battery maker Varta advises checking at least every four weeks and recharging at once if a battery reads 12.4V or less, as reported by Transport Operator.
4. Don’t let the battery run down
A lead-acid battery left partly charged forms sulfate crystals on its plates, which cut its capacity and are hard to reverse, according to Battery University. Short city trips, a fault in the charging system and equipment left on while parked all cause it.
Anything wired to stay powered, such as a GPS tracker, a radio memory or a faulty light, draws a little current while the truck is parked. Check for drains with the key off if a battery keeps going flat.
5. Secure the battery against vibration
Bangladesh’s roads shake trucks hard, and vibration loosens the active material inside the plates and stresses the terminals and case, according to Midtronics. Make sure the hold-down clamp is tight and the battery cannot move in its tray. Choose a battery built for commercial vehicles when you replace it.
6. Protect the battery from heat
Heat is the biggest enemy of a lead-acid battery. Each rise of about 8°C above 25°C roughly halves its life, according to Battery University and Midtronics. Under-bonnet temperatures above 38°C speed up both water loss and sulfation.
Bangladesh’s summer makes this matter. Keep the battery’s heat shield in place if the truck has one, park in shade when you can, check the water more often from March to October, and do not mount a replacement battery closer to the exhaust or engine.
7. Check the alternator and drive belt
A battery is only as good as the system that charges it. With the engine running, a healthy charging system holds about 13.8V to 14.7V across a 12V battery, or roughly double on a 24V system, based on lead-acid charge limits published by Battery University. Lower readings mean the battery is not being recharged; higher readings mean overcharging, which boils off water and damages the plates. Check that the alternator belt is tight and not cracked.
8. Charge it correctly
Use a charger that matches the battery’s voltage and type. Charge in a ventilated place and switch the charger off before connecting or disconnecting the clamps. Do not leave a basic charger connected for days, because overcharging damages the battery.
9. Replace both batteries in a 24V pair together
In a 24V system, the two batteries share the load. If you replace only one, the new and old batteries charge at different rates and the weaker one is left undercharged, which speeds up its failure. Varta advises replacing batteries as a set, from the same batch. Rotronics explains the effect in its guide to why vehicle batteries drop out of balance.
10. Look after the battery during long parking
Trucks often stand idle for days, such as during the Eid highway bans. Before a long stop, charge the battery fully, then disconnect the negative terminal or use a maintenance charger. Never store a battery on a low charge, and recharge a stored battery at least every six months, according to Battery University. Our trucking business tips cover planning around the Eid bans.
Warning signs of a weak truck battery
| Sign | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Engine cranks slowly | Low charge or ageing battery | Check resting voltage and charge |
| Battery goes flat after parking | Parasitic drain or failing battery | Check for drains, then load test |
| White or green crust on terminals | Corrosion | Clean the terminals |
| Swollen or cracked case | Overheating or overcharging | Replace the battery and check the alternator |
| Water level drops fast | Heat or overcharging | Check charging voltage |
| Battery warning light on while driving | Alternator or belt problem | Have the charging system checked |
A workshop load test gives a clearer answer. The battery is charged, then loaded at half its cold cranking amp rating for 15 seconds; if the voltage stays above 9.6V, it passes, according to Discover Battery.
How long does a truck battery last?
Life depends mainly on heat, charging and vibration. Battery Council International data show starter batteries averaging 59 months in cooler parts of the United States and 47 months in warmer ones, Battery University reports. Bangladesh’s heat is closer to the warmer end, so plan on replacing a hard-worked truck battery sooner than four years, and test it every few months once it passes two years old.

A 24V truck needs two batteries, so double these prices for a full set.
How to jump-start a truck safely
Only jump-start between vehicles of the same voltage: a 24V truck from another 24V truck, and a 12V pickup from a 12V vehicle. Connecting 24V to a 12V system can damage the starter and electronics, and if you are unsure, do not proceed, the HSE advises.
- Connect the red cable to the positive terminal of the flat battery.
- Connect the other end of the red cable to the positive terminal of the good battery.
- Connect the black cable to the negative terminal of the good battery.
- Connect the other end of the black cable to bare metal on the stalled truck’s engine or chassis, away from the battery.
- Start the good truck, then the stalled one.
- Remove the cables in reverse order.
On a 24V truck with two batteries, connect across the full pair, not to one battery. Crank for no more than a few seconds at a time, with a pause between attempts.
Dispose of an old battery safely
Most dealers take the old battery as part of the price of a new one, and lead makes up about 60% of a battery, or 8 to 10 kg, according to The Daily Star. Much of that lead goes to informal smelters, which are the main source of lead pollution in Bangladesh. About 35 million children, roughly 60%, have dangerously high lead levels, AFP reported in 2025, and the Department of Environment shut 16 illegal smelting sites near Dhaka in April 2025, according to the Financial Express.
Return old batteries to the brand’s dealer, ask whether they go to a licensed recycler, and never break a battery open or burn it.

Frequently asked questions
How often should I check my truck battery?
At least once a month: clean the terminals if needed, check the voltage and, for flooded batteries, the water level. Check more often in summer.
Which water should I put in a truck battery?
Distilled or deionised water only. Never use tap water or add acid. Sealed batteries cannot be topped up.
What voltage shows a fully charged 12V truck battery?
About 12.6V at rest. At 12.4V the battery is about 75% charged and should be recharged.
Why does my truck battery keep dying?
Common causes are a weak alternator or loose belt, equipment drawing power while parked, corroded terminals, heat damage or an old battery. Check the charging voltage and look for drains before replacing the battery.
How much does a truck battery cost in Bangladesh?
In October 2026, a 100Ah to 200Ah commercial battery cost roughly Tk 15,000 to Tk 30,000, depending on brand and size. A 24V truck needs two.
Can I replace just one battery in a 24V truck?
It is better to replace both together. A new battery paired with an old one charges unevenly, and the weaker battery fails sooner.
