Construction projects in Bangladesh need different trucks for different materials. Open trucks of 7.5 to 25 tons carry cement, rods and bricks; tipper or dump trucks carry sand, stone chips and soil; low-bed trailers move excavators and other heavy machines; pickups handle small, urgent supplies; and covered vans protect fittings, tiles and electrical goods. Book every truck by the weight of the load, not its volume. Keep within the legal axle limits, cover sand and soil while they are moving, as the High Court has ordered for Dhaka, and plan city deliveries for night, because large trucks are kept out of Dhaka during the day.
Here is how to match trucks to materials, the rules that apply and how to keep site deliveries on time and on budget.
Construction transport in 2026
Construction moves more freight by road than almost any other sector. Bangladesh’s cement makers sold about 40 million tonnes in 2025, up nearly 5% from 2024, against a production capacity of nearly 86 million tonnes, the Financial Express reported in March 2026. Every tonne of that cement, and the clinker, slag and limestone imported to make it, moves by truck or ship at some point.
The market has been uneven. Real estate business fell by at least 20% to 25% and construction materials by around 30% in the past year, a developer told The Daily Star, with project approvals running at about a third of a normal year. Cement makers expected demand to pick up through 2026. For contractors, that means tight budgets and little room for transport waste: a truck that arrives late, carries too little or is turned back costs a project money it cannot spare.
Fuel adds pressure. Diesel rose from Tk 100 to Tk 135 a litre in 2026, and freight rose by Tk 2,000 to Tk 8,000 a trip after the September increase, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
The right truck for each material
| Material | Best vehicle | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Cement (50 kg bags) | Open or covered truck, 7.5 to 25 tons | 20 bags make 1 tonne; keep bags dry |
| Steel rods | Long open truck or flat-bed trailer | Standard lengths are longer than most decks; secure the overhang |
| Bricks | Open truck, sized by weight | Bricks reach the payload long before the deck is full |
| Sand, stone chips, soil | Tipper or dump truck | Must be covered while moving in Dhaka |
| Tiles and sanitary ware | Open truck with careful stacking, or covered van | Stack on edge or on pallets; no loose pieces |
| Fittings, cables, glass | Covered van or covered pickup | Keep dry and locked |
| Excavators, rollers, generators | Low-bed trailer | Check bridge weight limits and lashing points |
| Small, urgent supplies | 1 ton pickup | Fits narrow lanes; allowed in Dhaka by day |
Cement
Cement is dense and heavy. A 50 kg bag means 20 bags make a tonne, so a 7.5 ton truck carries about 150 bags and a 15 ton truck about 300. Count bags, not space. Use a covered truck, or an open truck with a tarpaulin, because wet cement sets in the bag and is wasted.
Steel rods
Rods are heavy and long. Standard lengths are longer than most truck decks, so ask the supplier how the load will be carried, use a long-body truck or a flat-bed trailer for long lengths, and make sure any overhang is tied down and marked with a red flag or light. Rods sliding forward under braking is a real danger to the driver.
Bricks
Bricks are one of the easiest loads to overload, because a truck fills its payload long before its deck looks full. Ask the kiln for the weight per thousand bricks and book by that figure.
Sand, stone and soil
Loose materials go in tipper or dump trucks, which unload by tilting. They must be covered. In January 2020, the High Court directed that soil, sand and waste carried by trucks in Dhaka be covered, and in October 2025 it ordered full enforcement of its nine anti-pollution directives within three weeks, the Financial Express reported. The same directives tell sites to cover stored sand, soil, cement and stone.
Heavy machinery
Excavators, rollers and large generators need a low-bed trailer and a driver experienced with heavy loads. Check the route for low bridges, weak culverts and tight turns before booking, and use proper chains and lashing points. The different truck types, from tippers to low-beds, are built for different jobs, and using the wrong one for machinery is a common cause of damage.
Rules contractors need to know
Weight limits
Every truck has a registered laden weight and an axle-based legal limit. Under a 2016 RHD order, a two-axle truck may carry 13 to 22 tonnes in total depending on its wheel layout, a three-axle truck 30 tonnes and a seven-axle truck 52 tonnes. Overloading can cost the driver up to Tk 1 lakh, a year in prison and 2 licence points, and axle-load stations at the Padma and Jamuna bridges make overloaded trucks unload the excess. Construction materials are among the commonest overloaded cargoes, and the cost of overloading a truck falls on the project through delays as well as on the driver.
Dhaka timing
Large trucks are kept out of Dhaka during the day. On Truck Lagbe, trucks longer than 12 ft can only be booked for trips inside the city after 10:00 PM. Plan bulk deliveries for night, check that the site can receive them, and use pickups for daytime top-ups.
Smoke and unfit vehicles
The High Court’s directives also call for seizing vehicles that emit black smoke and banning vehicles past their permitted age. Trucks and covered vans have a 25-year economic life, and in April 2025 BRTA counted 46,481 goods vehicles older than that, Prothom Alo reported. An old, smoky truck can be stopped with your materials on board.
Eid bans
Trucks are kept off the highways for about a week around each Eid, with exemptions for essentials such as perishables, medicine, fertiliser and fuel. Construction materials are not usually on the exemption list, so stock up before the ban.
Planning site deliveries
- Schedule by stage. Match deliveries to the construction stage, so rods arrive before the concrete pour and tiles before the finishing work, without long storage on site.
- Check site access. Measure the gate, lane width and turning space, and tell the owner. A 23 ft truck that cannot enter the lane will unload on the road, which costs time and may break local rules.
- Prepare the unloading area. Clear a flat, firm spot, and have labourers ready when the truck arrives. On Truck Lagbe’s chart, waiting time past six hours adds Tk 300 to Tk 1,000 depending on truck size.
- Check what arrives. Count bags, check rod sizes and weights against the invoice and inspect tiles before the driver leaves.
- Store materials properly. Cover cement, sand and stone on site, as the High Court directives require.
- Keep records. Note every delivery’s truck, driver, quantity and cost. Over a project, the records show which suppliers and routes cost the most.
Costs
Inside Dhaka, Truck Lagbe’s fare ranges are from its Dhaka fare chart:
| Truck | Typical construction use | Fare range (Tk) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 ton, 9 ft pickup | Small supplies, fittings | 800 to 2,200 |
| 3.5 ton, 14 ft truck | Tiles, sanitary ware, small cement loads | 1,500 to 2,800 |
| 7.5 ton, 16 ft open truck | Cement, bricks, rods | 2,500 to 4,500 |
| 15 ton, 18 ft open truck | Bulk cement, rods | 3,500 to 5,000 |
| 25 ton, 23 ft open truck | Heavy bulk loads | 5,000 to 6,000 |
The chart was set before diesel rose to Tk 135 a litre, so expect bids near the top of each range. Tipper trucks and low-bed trailers are priced by the job; post the trip with the load details and compare bids.
Rent or own?
Most contractors are better off renting, because demand rises and falls with each project. Owning a truck makes sense only when it works most days of the year. Ownership brings a driver’s wages, fuel, tyres, maintenance, fitness and tax token renewals and, for older trucks, the uncertainty of the 25-year rule. A contractor who does want a truck can start with a used tipper or open truck, but should compare the yearly cost with renting before buying.
For regular project work, a middle option is to hire trucks by the day, month or project through a platform. That gives the steady supply of owning without the fixed costs, and the same benefits that digital logistics brings to any business: on-time trucks, compared prices and one point of contact.

Frequently asked questions
What truck is best for carrying cement?
An open truck with a tarpaulin or a covered truck, sized by weight. A 7.5 ton truck carries about 150 bags of 50 kg, and a 15 ton truck about 300.
What truck carries sand and stone?
A tipper or dump truck, which unloads by tilting. In Dhaka, sand and soil must be covered while they are moving, under High Court directives.
How do you transport an excavator?
On a low-bed trailer, with proper chains and lashing points. Check the route for weak bridges, low clearances and tight turns first.
Can construction trucks run in Dhaka during the day?
Large trucks are kept out of the city during the day. On Truck Lagbe, trucks longer than 12 ft can only be booked for trips inside Dhaka after 10:00 PM.
Should a contractor buy or rent trucks?
Most contractors should rent, because demand varies by project. Buying makes sense only if a truck will work most days of the year.
