For most bachelor moves in Dhaka, one 1 ton pickup and two labourers are enough. A single person with a bed, a table, a wardrobe and a few boxes fits in a 7 ft or 9 ft pickup, which costs roughly Tk 800 to Tk 2,200 a trip inside Dhaka on Truck Lagbe’s September 2026 chart. Two or three roommates moving together usually need a 2 ton, 12 ft truck, at about Tk 1,200 to Tk 2,700. Give your landlord two months’ notice, start looking for a new place early in the month, and book the pickup a day or two ahead, earlier at month-end.
Moving alone is harder than it looks. A family can split the jobs; a bachelor has to find the room, pack, book the vehicle, hire labourers and supervise the move alone. Planning ahead avoids the usual problems: a late pickup, no labourers, or a fare that changes on the day.
Before you start: notice, advance and the new room
Give notice early
Tell your landlord in writing that you are leaving and on which date. In January 2026, Dhaka North City Corporation said either side can end a residential tenancy with two months’ notice, and that advance rent should be limited to one to three months, UNB reported.
Settle your advance
Agree how your advance will be returned. Most tenants either adjust it against the last month or two of rent or take it back in full before leaving. Keep your rent receipts until it is settled.
Find the new room in good time
“To-let” signs go up mostly in the first days of the month, when tenants give notice, so start looking early in the month before you move. Once you find a room, pay the booking advance to hold it and get the move-in date in writing. Check that the landlord accepts bachelors, the house rules on guests and timings, and whether there is a lift.
Sort out a shared mess
If you are leaving a mess, agree with your roommates who owns which furniture and appliances, and who takes the shared items such as the fridge, gas cylinder or water filter. Settle the last month’s utility bills and the cook’s or helper’s wages before the move.
1. What size of vehicle do you need?
Most bachelors have a bed or mattress, a table and chair, a wardrobe or clothes rack, a few boxes and perhaps a fridge or a bicycle. That fits in a small pickup.
| Who is moving | Typical items | Vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| One person, a single room | Bed or mattress, table, chair, clothes rack, a few boxes | 1 ton, 7 ft or 9 ft pickup |
| One person with more furniture | Add a wardrobe, fridge, bookshelf or motorbike | 1 ton, 9 ft pickup, or covered pickup for electronics |
| Two or three roommates together | Two or three beds, wardrobes, a fridge, kitchen items | 2 ton, 12 ft truck |
| A full mess | Several beds, shared kitchen, furniture | 12 ft or 14 ft truck, or two pickups |
If your things sit between two sizes, go one size up. A slightly bigger vehicle costs a few hundred taka more; a second trip costs the full fare again. The choice between a pickup and a mini truck mostly comes down to weight and the number of large pieces.
2. How much does a pickup cost?
Inside Dhaka, these are the ranges from Truck Lagbe’s Dhaka fare chart. The low end is for a trip within one area and the high end for the farthest trip within the city.
| Vehicle | Dhaka fare (Tk) |
|---|---|
| 1 ton, 9 ft pickup | 800 to 2,200 |
| 2 ton, 12 ft truck | 1,200 to 2,700 |
| 3.5 ton, 14 ft truck | 1,500 to 2,800 |
The chart was published before diesel rose from Tk 115 to Tk 135 a litre in September 2026, so expect bids near the top of each range. A covered pickup costs a little more, and is worth it in the rainy season or if you are moving a TV, computer or mattress. On the Truck Lagbe app, a 1 ton pickup inside Dhaka has a fixed fare that you see once you enter the route.
Pickups and 12 ft trucks can be booked for daytime trips inside Dhaka. Trucks longer than 12 ft can only be booked for city trips after 10:00 PM on Truck Lagbe, which matters if a large mess is moving.
3. How many labourers do you need?
Saving money by hiring one labourer is tempting, but two are safer for a pickup. One person struggles with a wardrobe or fridge on a staircase, and dropped furniture costs more than a second labourer. For a 2 ton truck with several people’s belongings, plan for about four labourers, following Truck Lagbe’s shifting team’s advice.
Tell the labourers in advance about:
- the floor numbers at both ends and whether there is a lift;
- heavy or fragile items such as a fridge, TV or glass table;
- anything that needs to be taken apart, such as a bed frame or wardrobe.
4. How do you arrange labour, and what does it cost?
Labour is usually arranged separately from the vehicle. You can add labour when you book on the app, ask the truck owner to bring labourers, or hire local labourers yourself. Agree the price and the number of people before they start.
Labour charges depend on the number of labourers, the floors at both ends, whether there is a lift and the time of month. Month-end and upper floors without a lift cost more. Ask for a total price for the job rather than an hourly rate, and confirm whether it includes loading at the old place and unloading at the new one.
5. How much will the whole move cost?
Add up the vehicle, labour and packing materials. As a rough guide for a single person moving within Dhaka:
| Item | Rough cost (Tk) |
|---|---|
| 1 ton pickup | 800 to 2,200 |
| Two labourers | Agree a price for the job; more for upper floors and month-end |
| Cartons, tape and rope | A few hundred |
| Total | Usually a few thousand taka, depending mainly on distance and floors |
For two or three roommates with a 12 ft truck and four labourers, the total is higher but split between you, so it often costs each person about the same as a solo move. If you would rather not organise any of it, Truck Lagbe’s shifting service with packing and labour quotes the vehicle, labourers and packing together.
6. How do you book?
- Download the Truck Lagbe app and sign up with your mobile number.
- Enter the pickup and drop-off points, and add the floor numbers and landmarks in the description.
- Choose the vehicle, open or covered.
- Set the date and time. Book a day or two ahead, and earlier for the start or end of the month, when most people move.
- Describe your things and add labour if you need it.
- Confirm the trip, then call the driver to confirm the time and address.
For a 1 ton pickup inside Dhaka, the fare is fixed. For larger trucks, owners send bids, and you choose one. Payment, tolls and cancellations work the same way as any other truck booking on the app.
Packing tips for a bachelor move
- Start a week early. Pack books, winter clothes and things you rarely use first.
- Use your bags and suitcases for clothes, and cartons for books and kitchen items.
- Wrap fragile things one by one. Plates, glasses, a monitor or a mirror need paper or bubble wrap and a box with no gaps. The same rules apply to packing fragile items for any move.
- Take apart the bed and wardrobe if they will not fit through doors or around stair landings, and tape the screws to the frame.
- Keep an essentials bag with your documents, laptop, chargers, medicine, toiletries and a change of clothes. Carry it yourself.
- Defrost the fridge the night before if you have one.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking on the morning of a month-end move. Pickups are busiest on the first and last days of the month.
- Hiring one labourer to save money. A dropped fridge or broken wardrobe costs more than the second person.
- Not agreeing the labour price first. Settle it before anything is lifted.
- Forgetting the advance. Agree with the landlord how it will be returned before you hand over the key.
- Using an open pickup in the rain. A wet mattress or laptop is an expensive mistake.
Moving-day checklist
- Confirm the pickup and labourers in the morning.
- Stay with the labourers while they load, and make sure heavy items go in first.
- Take photos of the electricity and gas meter readings and of the room before you hand over the key.
- Check every cupboard, the roof and the balcony.
- At the new place, check that everything has arrived before the pickup leaves.
- Pay the driver and labourers the agreed amount, and rate the trip.
A bachelor move uses many of the same steps as a full family house shift, on a smaller scale.
